BE GRATEFUL FOR GOD’S WILL
12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.
Colossians 1:12 (CSB)
Paul expressed gratitude for the Lord’s promise of an inheritance that awaited him. He understood that this inheritance was not something earned by his own efforts but was bestowed because of his relationship with the Lord through Christ. This inheritance was part of God's overarching plan and will. God revealed the plan of salvation in the Old Testament and fulfilled it in the New Testament, making it accessible to everyone.
Be Grateful for Salvation. The apostle Paul expresses gratitude for the Colossians' salvation, recognizing that without Christ's work, it would be impossible. His thankfulness extends to the Lord on their behalf, inspired by a deep sense of gratitude for their redemption. We should also aim to live with a grateful heart because of our salvation. We must never take it for granted and always be thankful for what the Lord has done. A heart full of gratitude energizes our worship of Him.
Be Grateful for Eternal Life. Paul appreciates the salvation of the Colossians, but he also values the gift that accompanies salvation—eternal life. He understands that without salvation, eternal death would be inevitable for the Colossians. However, salvation offers the gift of eternal life and the promise of inheritance that comes with it. Recognizing this fills Paul with joy and thankfulness. When we reflect on the gift of eternal life that salvation provides, our hearts should be filled with gratitude. This attitude of thankfulness leads us to live joyfully and to seek ways to obey the Lord in our lives.
Live Gratefully. A life rooted in gratitude involves a commitment to stay faithful to the Lord and follow His commandments. We embrace the motto, “He died for me and I’ll live for Him.” When we lead with a grateful heart, we mirror God's love and shine a light on salvation. Such a life of thankfulness shows others the hope inside us and provides an opening to share how they too can experience the heart of gratitude we hold.
