Diverse Contributions
14 Luke, the dearly loved physician, and Demas send you greetings.
Colossians 4:14 (CSB)
Paul mentions two individuals in this verse, Luke and Demas. Each of these men was created and gifted differently. Yet, in partnership, they brought diverse contributions to the work. In unity and partnership, it is crucial that we recognize the importance of individuals bringing their unique contributions to the table because together we are stronger and better than we are individually at carrying out the task.
Uniquely Made. Each individual is wonderfully created (Psalm 139:14), showcasing God’s craftsmanship (Ephesians 2:10) and purposefully formed in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5). No two people are the same, as everyone is fashioned in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). God intentionally assembles us with purpose, for His glory (Isaiah 43:7). We are uniquely and precisely formed.
Uniquely Gifted. God equips every believer with different spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4). Believers receive these gifts and are called to manage them responsibly to serve the Kingdom of God (1 Peter 4:10). These gifts should not cause pride but instead foster unity within the body as we work towards a common purpose. We should not compare our gifts to others', but instead embrace what God has given us to fulfill His calling.
Unique Experiences. Paul’s mention of Luke and Demas shows that people possess distinct gifts and each one encounters unique moments in life. While little is known about Demas—except that he later turned away—we do know that Luke was a physician. These individuals served God, utilizing their backgrounds and individual talents. Today, it’s important to acknowledge that our experiences offer us unique training and opportunities to serve the Lord.
Embrace Unity within Diversity. In 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12, Paul discusses the idea of the Body of Christ. The image of a body emphasizes that each believer is a distinct part of the whole. However, no single part constitutes the entire body; rather, the body is made up of all different parts working together. Therefore, we are called to foster unity in the body of Christ, celebrating the diversity of its members.
