Guard Against Deception
8 Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.
Colossians 2:8 (CSB)
We need to stay vigilant and continually watch for the enemy's approach. Apostle Paul warned the Colossians to “be careful,’ understanding that without deliberate effort, they could become complacent spiritually. This complacency might create an opening for the enemy to cause havoc. The same principle applies today; we must remain alert and watchful at all times.
Be Watchful. Be vigilant against the enemy. Paul urged the people in Colossae to stay alert. He understood that the enemy seeks to deceive, attack undercover, and find small vulnerabilities to intrude and cause harm. The warning to watch out means that today, we must be aware of the enemy approaching us and also examine ourselves to identify any weaknesses the enemy could exploit for a foothold. Living attentively involves maintaining an intentional awareness of our environment and regularly assessing our spiritual well-being.
Understand the Sources of the Enemy. Paul emphasized that to watch for the enemy, we need to know about them. In military battles, assessments reveal details about the enemy's army. Similarly, in spiritual warfare, understanding the enemy's weapons is crucial. Paul states that the enemy uses philosophy and empty deceit rooted in human traditions to trap us. In philosophy, the enemy tries to cause doubt about the truth using logic and reason that seem rational but can be misleading. The Word of God reminds us that "there is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 14:12). Paul also warns against traditions that become routine and eventually lose their meaning and significance. His goal is for us to understand the enemy’s schemes and weapons so we can stay alert and guard ourselves.
Live Firm. Paul understood that staying in Christ depends on Christ being the foundation of life. He desired for believers to live steadfastly. To do so, we need to recognize the steps for remaining firm in the Lord. First, we must know His Word. Second, dedicate time to prayer. Third, trust in His strength. Fourth, evaluate our lives. Fifth, be prepared to repent when necessary. Sixth, be ready to speak truth. While there are other steps, these key components support living firmly in the Lord.
