Let Go of Futility

22 All these regulations refer to what is destined to perish by being used up; they are human commands and doctrines. 23 Although these have a reputation for wisdom by promoting self-made religion, false humility, and severe treatment of the body, they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence.

Colossians 2:22-23 (CSB)

The apostle Paul discusses the futility of religious rituals that seem to promote holiness in Colossians 2:22-23. These practices lack genuine spiritual value because they arise from human tradition and legalism. When tradition takes precedence over truth or the guidance of the Lord, believers risk missing out on His blessings and work. Paul's warning to the Colossians invites us to examine our own spiritual disciplines, activities, and practices. We should seek to deepen our relationship with the Lord and trust Him more each day. It is also important to guard against the dangers of legalism and merely following traditions.

Nonsustainable Traditions. Paul advises the Colossians to focus on spiritual faithfulness that fosters genuine growth. He worries that their traditions and practices are rooted in habit rather than in Jesus and His guidance. He understands that without Christ, these traditions and rules will fade and cannot sustain spiritual development. True growth and lasting transformation come solely through Christ.

We should be cautious of traditions and rules that might mislead us. The well-known last words of a dying church, “we have never done it that way before,” highlight the tendency to cling to traditions rather than follow Christ. It's crucial that we do not let temporary, unsustainable traditions overshadow the work and guidance of the Lord. Instead, we need to develop discernment to understand what the Lord truly wants and be willing to abandon our personal activities, traditions, and religious customs that hinder His work.

False Humility. Paul warns the Colossians about the existence of false humility. It happens when people elevate their spiritual practices while masking them with a false sense of humility, which is really just self-focused pride. This is like a spiritual humblebrag, where someone claims, “I am so humble that I have been blessed to achieve this or that spiritual practice.” Paul advises believers not to boast in their activities because there is nothing to boast about except Christ and Christ alone. Following Jesus requires self-denial and obedience. It’s about Christ and not about us. We must be careful to avoid false humility.
