Look to the Mountains

I will lift my eyes towards the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2 (CSB)

David opens Psalm 121 with the well-known line, "I lift my eyes toward the mountains." In defining his action, he inquires, "Where will my help come from?" He follows this by stating the only genuine answer: the Lord. Psalm 121 offers reassurance for placing hope in the Lord regardless of our circumstances. Therefore, we should look to the mountains and have faith in the Lord as our source of help.

Our Help Comes From Our Creator. David declared, "My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." This statement details how the Creator of all things cares deeply for his creation. As a result, the Lord did not create and then abandon his creation. Instead, the Lord created and continually engaged and works with and through his creation. Therefore, when help comes from the Creator, the one who created can recreate and restore. Thus, we find hope that our needed help comes from the one who created us.

Our Protector Never Sleeps. David noted that the Lord never "slumbers." He doesn't take breaks or naps that would hinder his ability to engage with and assist us. Instead, the Lord remains continuously awake and active in our lives. We find reassurance knowing he is never unavailable due to vacation or rest. Our hope stems from his constant presence and action. Therefore, our Protector is always there to support us, instilling hope through his unwavering presence.

Our Protector Never Abandons Us. David referred to the Lord's protection as the "shelter right by your side." The Protector never leaves his own but rather grants them refuge from the impending storm. Acting as a shelter, the Protector ensures safety and security when life's storms confront us. A shelter acts as a refuge where we can discover tranquility amidst turmoil. God remains with us; he always offers us shelter.

Our Protector Helps Eternally. David emphasized that God's protection is an everlasting promise. He affirmed, "the Lord will protect your coming and going both now and forever." This assurance stems from God's eternal nature and the unending promise made to His children. As children of God, we discover hope in the eternal protection offered by the Everlasting One. Therefore, when we turn our gaze to the mountains, we recognize the certainty of the Lord's presence and protection both now and in the future.

David shares profound insights on how God serves as our assistance. He emphasizes essential truths that highlight the importance of resting our lives on Christ's foundation and ensuring our hope is anchored in the Lord. We need to rely on Him, as He is the ultimate source of support in our lives. Instead of seeking help through other avenues, we should turn our gaze toward the mountains, looking to the Lord for guidance. Are you finding your help in the Lord and looking to the mountains?
