Persistent in Prayer

Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving.

Colossians 4:2 (CSB)

Prayer is considered a nonessential activity for followers of Christ. A life lacking prayer neglects communication with the Lord and overlooks God’s intention to work through prayer in one’s life. While moments of prayer may fluctuate, believers should actively seek to grow their prayer life. The apostle Paul reminded the Colossians and believers today that prayer is not a casual activity but should be an integral part of our devotion to the Lord.

Prayer Builds a Relationship with the Lord. Prayer happens when the true self communicates with the true You. Prayer is not just a two-way conversation between people but a dialogue between the Savior and the saved, the Creator and the created, and the Provider and the needy. Spending time in prayer strengthens the believer’s bond with the Lord, fostering greater dependence and surrender. When prayer is neglected, the believer’s relationship with the Lord becomes restricted and cannot grow fully.

Prayer Helps Bring Peace During Storms. Moments of crisis are opportunities to turn to the Lord. When we read about early church members imprisoned, we see they sought God through dedicated prayer. Prayer amid life’s storms reminds us that God is in control. It helps realign our focus and encourages total dependence on the Lord. As believers talk to God, the storm fades from our attention because our focus shifts to Him instead of the storm.

Prayer Aids in Building the Community of Faith. Prayer supports building the community by offering a way to share others' burdens through intercession before the Lord. When a faith community gathers to seek the Lord together, it strengthens their bonds because they rest on the bond of Christ that unites them. Prayer encourages the community as it creates opportunities for believers to show compassion, care, and support for one another.

Prayer and Serving. Prayer prepares the heart for service by opening it to God's voice. Through sincere prayer, believers share their concerns with the Lord and also listen for His guidance. Hearing from the Lord during prayer refines the heart for ministry, often through conviction, calling, or commands. As God speaks, believers should be ready in their hearts to serve.

Prayer should be an active part of believers' lives. It goes beyond merely saying thanks at meals or reciting blessings before sleep. Instead, prayer is sincere and honest communication with the Lord, aimed at deepening our relationship with Him.
