PRAYING FOR THE SAINTS

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,

Colossians 1:3(CSB)

The apostle Paul understood that praying for fellow believers is not an optional addition to faith, but a fundamental part of living in Christ. Instead of saying, “if I pray for you,” he affirmed, “when I pray for you.” He emphasized that prayer is not a mere possibility but an essential aspect of his relationship with the Lord. This perspective on prayer highlights the attitude we should have towards others—expecting to pray for them as a regular practice. Let’s explore some specific areas where we can pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Thanksgiving for Them. Paul frequently expressed gratitude to the Lord for the believers in Colossae. He appreciated their relationship with God and their faithful lives. His prayer of thanksgiving for the Colossians was an opportunity to celebrate God's goodness and work in their lives. It also served as a source of encouragement, highlighting their faithfulness. When we pray with thanksgiving for others, we focus less on ourselves and cultivate an attitude of putting Jesus first, others second, and ourselves last.  The prayer of thanksgiving is a moment of worship to the Lord, encouragement to others, and growth for the self.

Growth for Them. Paul prayed for the ongoing spiritual growth of the believers in Colossae. Considering the letter's background, these believers faced significant opposition that challenged their life in Christ and presented temptations that could hinder their faith. His prayer aimed to seek their spiritual strength to grow, which would enhance their ability to recognize the enemy's threats, remain faithful, and deepen their relationship with the Lord. When praying for others, it is essential to ask God for their spiritual development and strength.

Faithfulness for Them. Paul prayed for the Colossians to remain faithful to their beliefs amidst temptations and threats. His concern was not only their loyalty to the Lord but also their ability to reflect Christ through their faithfulness. His ongoing prayers highlighted the reality of spiritual warfare and the importance of mutual support among believers. Paul understood that their unwavering faith would serve as a testimony to others and be used by the Lord to glorify Himself and expand His kingdom.
