Colossians 3:10 (CSB)
In Colossians 3:10, Paul highlights the transformation that occurs through a relationship with Christ. He calls believers to let go of their former ways and adopt their new identity. This new self is characterized by a renewed understanding of God. It is essential to recognize the ongoing process of renewal and change in our lives. We should actively seek to live out our new identity in Christ, regardless of the obstacles, challenges, and difficulties we encounter.
Put on the New Self. The apostle Paul urged the Colossians to discard their old ways and embrace the new self. This new self is not self-created but is someone who surrenders to Jesus. It is established by the Lord and identifies with Him. The new self finds its identity in the Lord and trusts in His presence and guidance to give purpose to life. Putting on the new self is a deliberate act, akin to dressing in clothes that bear the Maker’s mark, symbolizing adoption into His kingdom.
The Significance of Renewal. Paul told the Colossians that they were undergoing a renewal in their knowledge. This renewal was not something they achieved on their own; rather, they received it as the Lord renewed them. The process of renewal happened to them, emphasizing that renewal is a continual part of a believer’s life. It takes place when we acknowledge our sins, seek repentance, and trust in the Lord’s power to restore us. Therefore, renewal is God’s responsive work to our desire for forgiveness and renewal. This is a vital daily practice.
Based on Jesus. Renewal is a divine act, with Jesus as the key agent. He is the creator who also became the one who restores. Only Christ paid the price for victory over death. He offers this victory to us and the chance to restore what was lost and be reconciled with God. Through renewal, we come closer to understanding the fullness of our creation in God's image. We realize that our existence depends on Jesus, and our hope rests solely in Him.
