The Royal Wedding

Your throne, God, is forever and ever; the scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of justice.

Psalm 45:6 (CSB)

Psalm 45 celebrates the majesty and beauty of a royal wedding. This wedding image points to the ultimate love between Jesus and the Church. The New Testament reflects this union in terms of marriage, and the Psalmist foreshadows it here. As a Royal Prophetic Psalm, this psalm highlights a royal wedding and signifies the future union of Christ and the Church.

The King’s Majesty (1-5). The Psalmist declares the king’s majesty. This declaration points to the love of God that He extends to humanity. The words of the Psalmist point to the majestic grace and mercy afforded to humanity by God. The foreshadowing hints at Christ. The declared words reveal to us the need for a personal relationship with Jesus and the grace and mercy we experience through this relationship with Him.

Majesty and Righteousness (6-9). The Psalmist speaks of the eternal majesty and righteousness of God’s Kingdom. God’s Kingdom is perfect in justice; it loves righteousness and despises wickedness. By pointing to Christ, the Psalmist reveals that the reign and rule of Christ are eternal and known for their righteousness. The rule of Christ is complete in righteousness because God defines righteousness. He despises wickedness because it opposes righteousness, thus opposing His very character. The majesty and righteousness described should provide encouragement for the child of God.

The Majesty of New Beginnings (10-12). The Psalmist uses the imagery of a wedding to describe the relationship with Christ. Psalm 45 speaks of the bride leaving her father’s house, committing to the groom, and experiencing the blessings of the union. This description paints a picture of life with Christ. When we enter into a relationship with the Lord, we must abandon our former homes and choose to live in the King’s house. We make a commitment to the Groom, Christ, and seek to live faithfully. The result of an authentic relationship with Jesus is the experience of the blessings of being a child of God.

The Majesty of the Bride (13-17). At a wedding, there is a moment when the bride enters the sanctuary. At that moment, all eyes are fixed on her, recognizing her adornment in beauty. The radiance of the bride symbolizes the union about to take place. In Christ, the church is the embodiment of this adorned beauty. We must reflect the radiance of our union with Christ and strive to make Him known.
