The Word of Christ Dwelling Richly
16 Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Colossians 3:16 (CSB)
Followers of Jesus Christ should be recognized as people of the Word. Recognizing Jesus without engaging with His Word is like knowing the rules but not applying them. Failing to embed Christ into your life and not openly confessing Him as Lord and Savior is mere hypocrisy and a form of spiritual self-deception. The Apostle Paul urged believers to “let the word of Christ dwell richly among you.” We need to work towards allowing the Word to permeate our lives and faith community.
Saturated in the Word. Paul urged the Colossians to let the Word 'dwell richly,' meaning to be fully saturated in it. When we immerse our lives in the Word, the truth becomes our guide on the journey as disciples. A true follower of Jesus is marked by living in this state of saturation. In John 8:31-32, Jesus states that being His disciple involves continuing in His Word, knowing the truth, and allowing it to set us free. To be saturated in the Word is to live fully within it. So, how can we effectively saturate our lives with the Word?
How to Be Saturated in the Word. Saturation doesn't happen without a source that fills us. For believers, the source that must fill us is the Word of God. For this saturation to happen, believers need to intentionally and consistently engage with God’s Word. Consistency comes when we set aside a specific time to spend with the Lord through His Word. We protect this time and make it a priority in our lives. We also ensure this moment remains consistent by adopting a regular approach to engaging with the Word. We resist the temptation to scatter our focus and instead aim to connect with the Word at a regular time and in a consistent way.
We must not only remain consistent, but also act with purpose. When we intentionally engage with the Word of God, we approach it with the desire to be moved by it. Our engagement is not a mere routine, but a conscious effort to seek the Lord's transformation through His Word. We are intentional when we look for ways to apply the truth and draw encouragement from how God has worked in the lives of past saints.
Benefits of Being Saturated in the Word. When believers immerse themselves in the Word of God, they encounter numerous advantages. Such immersion fosters spiritual growth and transformation. Engaging deeply with God's revelation encourages us to develop in our faith and know Him more personally. Additionally, living saturated in the Word strengthens us to resist sin and provides clear guidance for our lives. As we remain immersed in God's Word, we also find hope and comfort, resting in His promises and the hope they bring.
