Uniquely Woven

Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.

Psalm 139:16 (CSB)

The Creator God has intricately woven together every individual. The design of each person has occurred with precision and purpose. The Lord knows the plans for each individual, and these plans were known at the moment of conception. As we understand this truth, we must learn to seek the Lord for the plans He has for us, strive to live out those plans, and trust the Lord throughout the process of fully realizing those plans because He is our Creator God.

We Are Uniquely Made (13-15). The Lord intricately designs every one of us. The Psalmist describes this process with phrases such as: “formed my inward parts,” “knitted me together,” “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “made in secret,” and “intricately woven.” These expressions illustrate that God does not create mistakes or flawed beings. Every person is remarkable and valuable because they are crafted by God.

We embody a unique distinction among all of creation because we are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27). This status does not mean we are deities or exact copies of God. Rather, it indicates that we share similarities with God, yet do not replicate Him. The Scriptures consistently affirm that being in God's image suggests that we resemble Him and act on His behalf. When reflecting on our creation in God's image, we should seek to comprehend how this likeness manifests in moral, spiritual, mental, and relational dimensions.

The Psalmist begins Psalm 139 by illustrating our unique relationship with God. The first six verses emphasize that God knows us intimately, even more than we recognize ourselves, as our Creator who formed us individually. Simultaneously, nothing escapes the Lord's gaze; He knows everything and sees everything, with no secrets hidden from Him. Consequently, He deeply understands us by observing our actions, recognizing our intentions, and grasping the intricacies of our lives.

We are Uniquely Called (16). The Psalmist emphasizes that each person receives a distinctive calling that aligns with their created nature. The prophet Jeremiah was told that his role as a prophet was established while he was still in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5). God forms us for His glory, His purpose, and for His divine work. Even in our unformed state, the Lord has a specific plan and intention designed for us. The apostle Paul echoes this in Ephesians 2:10, reminding us that we are the “workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” The good works we are called to are not the same as those defined by human standards, but rather the good work of God’s kingdom.

When we engage Psalm 136, we must recognize the truth of our value and purpose. We must receive the challenge to pursue the calling that God extends to us and seek to live that our in faithfulness and obedience. To find the will of God in our lives, we must seek to spend time with the Lord. We must spend time in His Word. We must spend time in prayer. We must spend time surrendering our thoughts, desires, plans, and will and allow the Lord to redefine those with His desires, plans, and will. You have been uniquely woven for a unique calling.
