Children, Cherish Authority
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they won’t become discouraged.
Colossians 3:20-21 (CSB)
The Lord has established authority both in the world and within families. In family settings, this authority is reflected through parents, while in broader society, it manifests in rulers and authorities. Colossians 3:20-21 highlights the relationship between parents and children, emphasizing that parents have authority over their children, who are called to respect and obey their parents. As we reflect on this passage, let's recognize that this dynamic of authority and obedience is an act of faithfulness and worship.
Honor God in Parenting. A parent doesn’t own the child but serves as a steward in their life. God has given parents the opportunity to guide their children in a way that reflects Christ’s love. When parenting honors God, it’s not about behavioral control but about demonstrating Christ’s love, the truth of Scripture, and sharing the gospel with the child. Parenting involves recognizing that the home is the primary place for discipleship. When parents honor the Lord, they aim to protect the home and make it a place where God is honored, worshiped, and followed. Paul emphasized that parents should not be controlling but should raise children in love and truth.
Honor God by Obeying Your Parents. When children obey, they demonstrate their respect for the Lord by following His commands. God established the parent-child relationship and defined its dynamics. Obedience from children reflects faithfulness, honoring the Lord. More than mere obedience, honoring parents signifies the gospel's truth. A child’s obedience is a form of discipleship, reflecting their growth in faith, love, and maturity. Honoring parents is not only an earthly duty but also a divine one.
Seeking God for Obedience as Parents and Children. Both children and parents need God's guidance and strength to live out their relationship. They should pray for guidance, wisdom, and discernment. Parents should pray for wisdom, discernment, and guidance, while children should pray for the ability to follow and to overcome pride. Parents need to seek the truth in God’s Word to understand and teach it, and children should turn to the Word to verify the truth they learn. Ultimately, their relationship grows stronger as each one seeks the Lord, who works within each of them, transforming their lives.
