Work for Jesus

23 Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, 24 knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong he has done, and there is no favoritism.

Colossians 3:22-25(CSB)

Every part of our lives should be surrendered to the Lord and used as an opportunity to serve Him. This understanding means that even our workplace can be a place to serve the Lord. The apostle Paul emphasized to the Colossians the importance of working for Jesus in every aspect of life. As we reflect on this, let us see our workplace as a space for worship, mission, and serving the Lord.

Use Work as Worship. The apostle Paul urged believers to do everything sincerely from their hearts and to serve the Lord. This act of obedience stems from living as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:2). Such an attitude reflects a life of ongoing worship. In the workplace, this means worshiping the Lord in all aspects of your work. You thank the Lord for the opportunity to work and for the ability to do so, making your workplace a mission field dedicated to obedience.

Use Work as a Mission. A believer's motivation for work isn’t for others’ approval but for the Lord. God calls believers to view the world as a ready harvest (John 4:35) and to live with a continuous mission (Matthew 28:18-20). When work is seen as a mission field, perspectives shift. Serving the Lord becomes the priority, and sharing the gospel becomes essential. This can be expressed verbally or demonstrated through actions. When work adopts a mission mindset, believers prioritize the Lord above the work itself. In this way, work turns into an opportunity to serve God and experience His faithfulness.

Use Work As a Platform. Work can often feel like a struggle or just a routine, but it can be transformed into a means to serve the Lord. When we view work as a platform for ministry, we approach it with a new perspective. Instead of focusing on the immediate moment, we see our work as connected to eternity. It becomes about an eternal inheritance rather than just a paycheck, and about opportunity rather than dread.

QUESTIONS

  1. What are practical actions you can take in your workplace or other places in life to worship the Lord, be on mission for the Lord, and use the platform God has given you to serve Him?

  2. How would you identify your life? Are you completely sold out to the Lord, or do you compartmentalize your life and try to separate your relationship with the Lord from other areas?
