Give Me Courage to Follow

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole empire[a] should be registered. 2 This first registration took place while[b] Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.

4 Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, 5 to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him[c] and was pregnant.

Luke 2:1-5

THOUGHT

Luke 2 begins with Joseph and Mary's journey to Bethlehem, prompted by a decree for a census. This order required them to travel to Bethlehem, the city of Joseph’s ancestors. The trip was long and uncomfortable, especially since Mary was pregnant. However, God used Caesar's decree to accomplish His plan. Mary and Joseph weren’t just traveling to Bethlehem; they were stepping into the fulfillment of God’s prophecy.

These verses highlight that Mary and Joseph exemplified the importance of courage in resisting worldly circumstances and trusting in the Lord's guidance. They showed a kind of courage that accompanied them at every step and relied on the Lord to position them where they were meant to be.

REFLECTION

We should have the courage to follow the Lord, just like Mary and Joseph. Following God's call can be challenging and requires bravery, especially when choosing difficult routes that follow His timing, methods, and plans. This courage is rooted in knowing that He is with us throughout. When we trust and obey the Lord in faith, He may not eliminate every obstacle, but He gives us the strength and bravery to face them. Additionally, we should recognize that God often uses unexpected events to guide us toward His purposes and to lead us to the place He has planned for us.

PRAYER

Lord, grant me the courage to follow You as You guide and direct my path. Help me seek Your guidance. Let me surrender my desires and life to You, walking in complete and brave faith. Amen.
