Rooted in Love

For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling for you, for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person. I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ.

Colossians 2:1-2 (CSB)

The apostle Paul emphasizes to the Colossians that their life's foundation should stem from their relationship with Jesus. He urges them to ultimately anchor their lives in Christ. At the start of chapter 2, Paul encourages the Colossians to ground their work and unity in the love they share through their connection with the Lord. His message reminds us today that love, when derived from Christ, should energize our efforts to serve Jesus alongside others.

Be Encouraged by the Gospel Work. Paul faced many obstacles in his gospel ministry but stayed inspired by the work of the Lord. He actively shared the gospel and witnessed lives being changed. Additionally, he heard about how the power of the gospel was transforming others' lives, which encouraged him. Our gospel ministry should inspire us as well. Whether we personally participate in sharing Christ and see people respond or simply hear about others being redeemed, we should find encouragement in the impact of the gospel ministry.

Be Encouraged in Fellowship. Find encouragement through the fellowship. Paul aimed for the Colossians to experience the love of the faith community. This love unites believers because it is rooted in Jesus. When our love is grounded in Christ's love, it strengthens us since it is genuine and authentic. It embodies grace and mercy, independent of our actions. We are uplifted by this love because it surpasses worldly love. Such love is desirable because it is contagious and aligns with a perspective that places Jesus first, others second, and oneself last.

Be Encouraged to Grow. Paul understood that fostering gospel work and sharing in the fellowship of the church would motivate believers to deepen their walk in Christ. As they witness the impact of gospel ministry, their desire for more outreach would increase. Likewise, experiencing authentic love and community would inspire them to seek greater fellowship. Participating in gospel activities with others helps nurture essential spiritual growth, ultimately leading to spiritual maturity. We should let our involvement in gospel work and fellowship encourage us to advance in our spiritual journey with the Lord.
