The Buried King
Saturday of Holy Week is the quietest day of the week. Jesus has died and is laid in a tomb. The cross is behind, yet the resurrection has not occurred. This day symbolizes grief, darkness, confusion, and anticipation. For believers, it feels familiar—we live in the tension between our current experiences and the hope and promises in the Lord. The truth is that the Buried King shows us that God remains active even during times of silence.
THE KING IS BURIED (MATTHEW 27:57-61)
The Gospel of Matthew describes how Joseph of Arimathea bravely requested Jesus's body. He aimed to treat the body respectfully and ensure a proper resting place. Joseph then buries Jesus in a new, unused tomb. This tomb becomes a symbol of finality for the disciples, as their hopes seem to fade. However, the disciples fail to see the true meaning. What appears to be defeat is actually part of God’s plan. This story reminds us today to trust in God’s promises rather than our own perceptions.
THE TOMB IS SEALED (MATTHEW 27:62-66)
The religious leaders were not content with Jesus simply resting in a tomb; they wanted to secure it to prevent any removal of the body. To address their insecurity, they placed a large stone and guards at the tomb. Their goal was to prevent Jesus’ claims from being validated. Ironically, their sealing of the tomb served as further evidence of the miraculous work of the Lord. Ultimately, their actions paved the way for the truth to emerge: no human effort can thwart the Lord’s purposes, plans, and work.
THE DISCIPLES WAIT IN THE DARKNESS
The Bible offers limited details about what the disciples experienced that day. As humans, we can imagine they likely grappled with feelings of doubt, despair, confusion, and uncertainty. The one they had loved and followed was now laid in a tomb. This moment shows that faith is often challenged during times of silence. The disciples highlight the importance of trusting in God's work, even when we struggle to feel or see it.
GOD IS WORKING IN THE SILENCE
The world didn't realize on Holy Saturday that the Lord was winning the battle against sin and death. The silence of that day was not laziness but divine labor and preparation. Sunday is imminent. God's work persists even when He appears absent or when His actions are unseen. We should avoid seeing silence as lack of activity or indifference and instead trust in the Lord's promises that He is at work.
VITAL TRUTHS FOR LIFE
Holy Saturdays are common in all our lives, marking times of perceived unanswered prayers, unresolved grief, and battered hope. During these moments, the tomb encourages us to remain faithful in silence. We should focus on anchoring ourselves in the Word of God and trust in the Lord's ongoing work and power. The reality is that the coming of Sunday is assured, even if it hasn't arrived yet.
Let us strive to seek the Lord for strength and resolve to stay faithful during the Holy Saturdays of life. May we stay faithful even when we cannot see His work, anchoring our hearts in the Word while waiting in faith, because the resurrection is always near.
