The Mercy of God

49 because the Mighty One
has done great things for me,
and his name is holy.
50 His mercy is from generation to generation
on those who fear him.

Luke 1:49-50

THOUGHT

Mary continues to praise the Lord by calling Him the Mighty One and highlighting His holiness. By describing the Lord as the Mighty One, Mary emphasizes His all-powerful nature, which is sufficient to overcome human weaknesses and accomplish His will. She understands that this power is united with purity because of God’s holiness. However, God's power and purity do not lead Him to remain distant; instead, they enable Him to approach us with mercy. Mary recognizes that this truth is not temporary but an eternal reality passed down through generations.

These verses show that God’s mercy extends across time, generations, circumstances, and nations, making it accessible to everyone. Mercy fuels joy because both are eternal gifts that never diminish when they come from the Lord. The all-powerful, holy God who was active in Mary's life is the same all-powerful, holy God who offers mercy to people across all generations.

REFLECTION

When reflecting on the greatness, holiness, and mercy of the Lord, we should feel inspired to praise. Remembering God’s greatness reminds us that He is capable of making the impossible possible. In His holiness, we recognize that God is perfect and pure, entirely righteous. In His mercy, we recall God's loving heart, which desires to be with us.

PRAYER

Lord, help me to be reminded and grateful for Your mercy. May I remember that your compassion never fades and that Your kindness is constant. May I allow these truths to push me to continue to draw near to You. Amen.
