Nothing is Impossible
34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?”
35 The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Luke 1:34-37
THOUGHT
Mary reacts to God's plan with doubt and questions. Her response reflects human logic — as a virgin, having a child seemed impossible. This internal conflict was clear when she asked the messenger, “How can this be?” The answer was simple, not a lengthy theological explanation, but a brief statement: “For nothing is impossible with God.” Essentially, it was about trust. Mary was asked to trust in God's plan and power.
These verses highlight the importance of trust. God did not require Mary to understand the entire plan or its logistics; He simply wanted her to trust Him. This trust would demonstrate Mary’s faith in the Lord, her recognition of God’s goodness, and her full dependence on His work in her life. Mary’s response to the Lord would show what she believed about the Lord’s power and ability to keep His Word.
REFLECTION
We should strive to understand the Lord’s plans and ways. Often, our view is obstructed by barriers, weaknesses, doubt, and questions. We need to ask the Lord for the ability to recognize the opportunities He provides instead of obstacles, to see His strength in our weakness, and to trust Him to resolve our doubts and questions.
PRAYER
Lord, help my questions find answers in You. Assist me in overcoming moments when I feel the task is impossible by reminding me that all things are possible with You. Let me remember that Your power and ability surpass my limitations. Strengthen my faith, Lord. Amen.
